VALENTINE'S SPECIALS
For newslettler subscribers only.
The Wild Heart Journal
Buffalo with free-range deerskin hearts
and wrap closure. Each is a one of a kind and heart placements will vary. The free range leathers I use come from game animals that are legally hunted. They provide an organic source of meat and live light on the earth until the moment they are taken. Hunting also provides impetus for conservation efforts and helps to promote healthy deer populations. The alum tanned buffalo is a low chemical leather. Click here to read more about the pro-impact leathers I use.

These can be worn long or as chokers. Most of the beads are bone that I hand-dye, including the infinity pendant. I use coffee, teas, walnut hulls and other stronger dies to get a range of earthy hues. Leather and bead tones will vary. Each will be a one of a kind.
These can be ordered as shown or in any combination of pendant, stone and strap color that you choose.
ACRE Wholesale Show in Orlando
My first wholesale show went GREAT. I took orders for spring and summer, made lots of wonderful contacts and learned LOTS!!! I will be adding new shops to my galleries and shops list as they are due to receive orders.
Update on Cell Cases, Purses and Man Bags...
Sometimes I get ahead of myself!!! I am still excited about these and I have some great design ideas but I need to focus on some other work first. Keeping a balance of creativity and productivity is one of the hardest parts about making a living as an artist.
In preparing for my wholesale show, I had to make some choices about what products to focus on and I felt drawn to put my limited time into finally moving forward in the development of a line of hand-bound leather albums that has been calling my attention for quite some time now. So in the next newsletter, I will be introducing my new line...

The Fly Stop in La Jolla, Ca.
There are so many directions an artist can go and a little guidance is always welcome! A few years ago, I was sitting next to the stream across from where I live, questioning whether working with Orvis was really a direction that I should be pursuing with my work. My uncle, Daniel Winkler, is a master bladesmith. He had been creating limited edition custom pieces for their catalog for years. My Aunt Karen's incredible leather work accompanies his knife work but ONLY his knife work. Her work has an earthy Native American feel that makes people ooooh and ahhhh!!! and when Orvis asked her to make some pieces for the catalog, apart from Danny's, knives it wasn't even a consideration. But since Aunt Karen and Danny have been my main teachers over the years and my work and style reflect that relationship, they offered ME the opportunity to create some pieces for the catalog...and I jumped on it. So a few contracts later, there I was looking at a little white fly hovering above the water pondering whether to continue creating new designs for Orvis when directly in my line of vision, a fish jumped up and snatched it out of the sky...That translated as a big fat "yes" to me. The fly lanyards above are a direct result of following that "yes". A few days ago, I received a call from a representative of theflystop.com, a premier online fly fishing provider. They are opening a brick and mortar shop in lovely La Jolla, CA. in February and want to carry my lanyards and journals along with some other products that we are discussing. Something felt really right about the call and when I put the phone down, I looked out my window to see a man fly fishing the exact same spot in the creek where I had seen the fish jump a couple years before. I have never seen a fly fisherman on that part of the river in the 8 years I've been here. Again, another big fat "yes" from the universe, or god, or however you like to refer to the blessing of divine orchestration... It will be interesting to see where this all leads : )! I give thanks for the opportunity to do what I love.
The Dancing Moon in Boone!
I am considering the Dancing Moon my playground...As I develop my new lines for wholesale to galleries, boutiques, catalogs and the like, I need room to play and create. During the discovery process and as the new lines unfold, there are many random one-of-a-kinds and slightly imperfect pieces that unfold. Locals can visit the Moon to find bargains on some of these items along with some of my more tried and true items like, corded deerskin necklaces and bracelets, medicine and treasure pouches, journals and barrettes.
Facebook, Twitter and the like...
I'm getting the hang of it...all new work will be tweeted and posted to my facebook page as it becomes available.

Progress on my dream....
The basic dream...building my business as a platform to create viable and sustainable economic opportunity for Appalachian women (especially mother's). Supporting self empowerment and positive parenting among these women through my business.
So last we left our heroes, they were looking for a new place for home and shop after the place they had rented for the past eight years sold in the span of a WEEK!...
New Years Creek
Blowing Rock, NC A snapshot of our family land. This creek is one of my favorite places to go and reconnect with my spirit and remember what the point of this wild life is all about. |
Ok- the jury is in... I am moving HOME!!! My daughter, Juliet, and I will be moving into the "sweetest place I've ever known". We traveled around a lot when I was a kid but "Nana and Granddad's" in Blowing Rock, NC was always home. I was in heaven waking up there on summer mornings with the mountain breeze gently blowing in the window. In the company of my grandparents and the cradle of these sweet Appalachian mountains my heart was completely at peace. And NOW- blessing of blessings!!- I have the privilege of moving into the very house where these sweetest memories of my childhood were made. We will be only minutes from the rest of my family who all live down the bumpy Globe Road that goes off the back side of Blowing Rock. And best of all, my daughter and I will have lots of quality time to spend with and assist my Granddad as he moves more deeply into the winter of his life.

State of the Shop Address
The commitment to my first wholesale show in Orlando was a great step for me. Among other things, I learned that I have a lot more to learn before I can gracefully/successfully expand my business beyond my own capacity to produce. It will be about a month before my shop is up and fully operational again but the exciting news is my shop will now be located in Boone in my uncle, Daniel Winkler's, facility. He and his partner, my aunt, Karen Shook, are entrepreneurs to the core!!! Just out of high school in 1988, I began doing leather work for them and watched their career take off when Danny's knives were featured in the the film the Last of the Mohicans. Now I am watching their career boom to a whole new level as his knives were just featured in the film Zero Dark Thirty. I have worked on and off with them for years and I feel very fortunate to have to opportunity to be working with them again as I continue to grow my own business.
